To say I was scared is an understatement. I knew how uncomfortable having my semi-permanent IV's were when I banged them into everything, this being in until I had my baby had me legitimately worried. I had to be in a completely sterile room, draped in a led cape so x-ray wouldn't penetrate the baby, and Conrad couldn't be with me. My arm was swabbed from my armpit to just past the bend in my arm, all the way around. There was a two minute wait period for the chlora-prep to dry, then came the 1% lidocaine needle to inject my arm to keep me from feeling too much. OUCH. Just OUCH! (My arm, 10 days later, is still bruised from that.)
The whole placing the line after the initial poke took about five minutes maybe... I didn't want to watch the process... just place it so I don't have to think about it. I have what's called a 5 french double lumen, meaning I have two ports into my arm instead of just one. ( http://www.bardaccess.com/products/ir/powerpicc ) This thing is fed into my arm, through the brachial artery (I think that's what the paperwork said) and into the vena cava in my heart.
The day it was placed.

My PICC line and I are still waiting for home healthcare to be assigned to me for fluids and medicine, and in the meantime it's trips to the L&D floor in Boise and praying for no blood clots or infection in the meantime. If I were to have one of those, it could be very bad for me very fast.
The last trip to Labor and Delivery, little dude had an amazing time dancing away from the fetal monitor and every now and again, he'd let me hear his galloping heartbeat. I'm so grateful for modern medicine that helps make this all bearable. I don't know what I'd do without it.
